A typical essay on career goals should be between 900 - 1200 words. However, make sure you consult with your teacher and be sure to stick to the recommended essay length s/he provides.
Before we delve into how to write a career goal essay, let us cover some “dos” and “don’t”.
Do not make accomplishing your career goal all about attaining a huge financial reward. Worse than that, do not discuss controversial “hot topics” as you may offend your professor’s point of view on the issue. Keep your essay focused on educational and long-term career goals.
The main objective of a career goal essay is to walk your reader through your life’s career aspirations and the specific steps you’ll take to accomplish them.
Writing an essay about your future career goals is simply the act of explaining your passions, professional goals, and future plans. You will mostly be giving the details on how you aim to accomplish them. The best way to do this is to create a list of both short-term and long-term goals.
Before you begin writing your essay about your career goals, always start by asking yourself these important questions:
The next step is to draft short answers to those questions. This will help you avoid “writer’s block” and help you build a logical flow to your essay.
Your introductory paragraph helps your reader understand what the rest of your essay is going to be about. Share your intended career, why you chose it, and what motivates you to pursue it. Also, always aim to start your introduction with something that will grab the reader’s attention.
For example,
“The saying ‘failing to plan is planning to fail’ has always resonated with me. From an early age, my parents taught me about the importance of setting life goals with specific steps on how to attain them. Early in my teenage life, my dad lost all his retirement due to a company downsizing. Ever since then, I made it my career goal to become an Entrepreneur to help create jobs for others.”
The body of your essay should elaborate on how you intend to accomplish the career goal you mentioned in the introduction.
This is where you share the skills you intend to acquire that will put you in the direction of your career path. Also, create separate paragraphs that discuss your short and long-term goals.
For example,
I knew that in order to become a successful Entrepreneur I needed to understand how the world of business worked. Therefore, I decided to major in Business Administration with a focus in Marketing.ss
My short-term goal is to….ss
My long-term goal is to…ss
Your short-term goal could be things like graduating with a good GPA, taking online classes on topics related to your chosen career, and so on.
Your long-term goal could include things like working in a company in-line with your career path. Preferably a career that will serve as a launching pad to help you gain more real-world experience in your chosen field.
Furthermore, use this opportunity to paint a clear picture of how you plan to use this knowledge you have acquired to make a major impact on society. Let your passion come true so your reader sees how enthusiastic and serious you are about achieving your career goal. Your professor will sense your devotion and sincerity which will result in getting a high grade.

Make use of transition words within a sentence and when starting a new paragraph.
This includes words like “In this paragraph, However, Therefore, In addition, Furthermore, In other words, Similarly, For example, For instance, In conclusion”.
According to Yoast.com, “transition words make it easier for your readers to understand how thoughts and ideas are connected. They also prepare your reader for what’s coming.”
Use your conclusion to summarize what you have discussed in your body paragraph. An example of a good conclusion will be:
“In conclusion, I am very optimistic that I will achieve my goal of becoming a successful Entrepreneur. This is because I have specific action plans that will guide me towards my goal. I know by sticking to this plan, I will meet my goal of financially supporting my parents and family in 5 - 7 years from now. I also will be able to impact the economy by creating hundreds of new jobs for others.”
