What Makes a Good Case Study Topic? (4 Criteria)
Not all topics are equal. Before you commit to one, run it through these four checks.
Specificity. "Netflix" isn't a topic. "How Netflix's 2022 pricing changes affected subscriber retention in North America" is. Your topic needs a clear focus a specific decision, event, or outcome you can actually analyze.
Researchability. Can you find real data, documented outcomes, or credible sources? This is the most important check. If you search Google Scholar and can't find at least five relevant sources in 10 minutes, the topic probably won't work.
Scope. Is it completable in the time you have? A semester-long project can support a broader topic than a two-week assignment. Be honest about your timeline before you start.
Relevance. Does it connect to what you've been studying? A strong case study demonstrates course concepts your professor isn't just looking for an interesting story, they're looking for applied thinking.
A case study topic that's too broad gives you nothing to say; one that's too narrow gives you nowhere to go.
Red Flags: Topics to Avoid (and Why)
Most bad topic choices fall into one of four patterns.
"Too big to analyze." Picking entire industries or global events "the 2008 financial crisis" or "climate change" gives you no real focus. A case study needs one specific case at its center.
"Purely theoretical." Topics like "the ideal leadership style" have no real-world instance to anchor your analysis. A case study needs a case a specific person, company, or situation that actually happened.
"No accessible sources." Some topics sound great but rely on proprietary data, sealed court records, or internal company documents you can't access. Always verify sources exist before committing.
"Already saturated." Apple, Amazon, Tesla every professor has read dozens of papers on these. Unless your angle is genuinely fresh and specific, a less-obvious choice will stand out more and be easier to write.
The most common case study mistake is starting with a topic that sounds impressive but can't actually be researched.
Some fields have their own red flags worth noting. Nursing topics: avoid anything where patient records would be your primary source. Psychology topics: avoid anything requiring live subjects unless your course explicitly supports primary research.
How to Narrow a Broad Idea Into a Workable Topic
Here's a process that takes about 15 minutes and saves hours of wasted effort.
Step 1: Start with a field interest. "I'm interested in healthcare management."
Step 2: Add a problem or tension. "Specifically, staff shortages and burnout."
Step 3: Anchor it to a real case. "How one major hospital system responded to nurse burnout during COVID-19."
Step 4: Check scope. Search for published reports, institutional data, or news articles. Can you find enough? If yes, you have a topic.
Here's what that narrowing looks like in practice:
- Too broad: "Healthcare challenges"
- Workable topic: "Impact of nurse staffing ratios on patient satisfaction scores at large urban hospitals during 2020–2022"
You're not looking for a topic you're looking for a case. Once you find the real-world instance, the topic writes itself.
